How to evaluate the effectiveness of engagement measures

While many companies will get involved in employee engagement, most of them will only make it half way there. They might launch various initiatives for employees to get involved, followed by a survey in which employees can tick whether they liked the activity. And then that’s it. They won’t check the effectiveness of engagement measures.

There are other ways to do it. Successful employee engagement follows a simple scientifically based life cycle. Together with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) we have developed the necessary foundation. The life cycle begins with measuring the status quo, assessing areas for improvement, defining appropriate measures and evaluating their effectiveness and long-term impact.

How to: measures

It is crucial that once engagement measures have been defined, you evaluate their effectiveness. We ask specific follow-up questions in frequent surveys (pulse checks) and observe the trend line after implementing each new measure. Our technology can incorporate virtually any type of measure. The pulse check asks whether employees took notice of the measure and how they felt about it. Then the cycle starts over again with a recalculation of engagement.

For example, if a company decides that employees no longer have to wear a tie to work, it is possible to check how this measure affects the people and culture in the company. Are those participating more creative than before because they have freed themselves from the rigid “corset” of a tie? Or does it make employees feel more insecure? Ideally, this measure was implemented after taking the interests, needs and feedback from previous pulse checks into account.
